In the summer of 2013, Detroit hit economic rock-bottom. With the city’s population down more than 60% from its 1950s peak, and the auto industry still reeling from the Great Recession, the city declared bankruptcy; its unemployment rate at one point topped 25%. To help the city bounce back, JPMorgan Chase teamed up with local government, other employers, and nonprofits on Invested in Detroit, a program through which the company has poured over $200 million into Detroit’s economy in the form of job training, loans for small businesses, and real estate financing. The bank’s biggest innovations involved extending credit to entrepreneurs and property buyers who lacked the collateral or credit histories to qualify for traditional loans—a major problem in underserved and lower-income communities. To date, Invested in Detroit has helped place some 72,000 Detroiters into apprenticeships or jobs, while providing financing or technical aid to 13,000 small businesses. Detroit’s jobless rate is now just 6.4%. JPMorgan Chase, meanwhile, has benefited from a healthier economy: Since 2017, its numbers of consumer and business accounts, market share, and commercial lending in the metro area have all grown by double-digit percentages. And the bank has taken some of its innovations national: Its Entrepreneurs of Color Fund, first launched in Detroit, has made more than 2,100 loans, worth over $115 million, to entrepreneurs nationwide.

The largest bank in the U.S. got even bigger in early 2023 after acquiring failed lender First Republic. It reported record revenues of $154.8 billion for 2022, up 22% from the year prior.

A Wall Street boom fueled record profits for JPMorgan Chase in 2021: The company delivered $48.3 billion in earnings for the year, as fees from mergers and acquisitions and trading revenue swelled the bank’s margins. That said, the megabank’s leadership has signaled that the party could be winding down. CEO Jamie Dimon said in April 2022 that the global economy was facing “unprecedented” risks, warning that factors such as the war in Ukraine and high inflation could possibly lead to recession. In February 2022, JPMorgan Chase became the first commercial bank to enter the metaverse, setting up a virtual shop in the Metajuku mall. In the real-world workplace, the bank has been less bullish about virtual interaction, with Dimon urging reluctant employees to return full-time to the office.

As COVID-19 began its global spread, CEO Jamie Dimon publicly worried there would be another great financial crisis. But despite the financial challenges faced by many Americans, the nation’s largest bank remained largely unfazed. In 2020, JPMorgan Chase posted record net revenues of $119.5 billion, though profits sank 20% from the year prior, owing in part to billions set aside to cover bad loans. One bright spot was JPMorgan’s markets revenues, which came in at a record $29.5 billion in 2020 as traders capitalized on volatile swings in the prices of stocks and other assets. Fees from the firm’s investment banking activities, meanwhile, rose 25%. In 2021, Dimon is singing quite a different tune to shareholders: He has predicted a “boom” that could “easily run into 2023.” Indeed, the firm has started to release some of those loan loss reserves it built up in 2020—a vote of confidence that the recovery has truly taken hold.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues. 

Wal-Mart stayed on top as its sales crept closer to half-a-trillion dollars. Apple moved into the top five. And UnitedHealth Group continued its steady climb.

We asked this question of ourselves. Where is the greatest corner, the greatest block in the greatest neighborhood in New York City? And everybody in the room said, Well, we're on it. It's right here at 270 Park Avenue. Towering 1,388 ft over Midtown East is JPMorgan Chase's new global headquarters, 270 Park Avenue. This bustling avenue is home to luxury high rises and neighboring Fortune 500 companies, a gem for real estate. But construction isn't the only thing making noise on Park Avenue. Days into the new year, the bank notified its employees about a return to the office. The mandate would be for 5 days a week starting as soon as March. The conversation has since sparked backlash from workers. JPMorgan Chase is the nation's biggest bank with $4 trillion in assets at the end of 2024. The bank ranks number 7 on the Fortune world's most admired companies list, 2 spots lower than the previous year. Could sky-high terraces and a decked out food court. To its new headquarters be enough to win over workers in New York? Why is JPMorgan Chase building this new office building? What does it give that the current one that we're in can? It's become more and more apparent to everybody that place, the physical place, is really important for folks, for their energy, for the way they feel about themselves, and the way they feel about their companies. David Arena is the head. Of global real estate at JPMorgan Chase, he says the building was designed with employee wellness, safety, and hospitality in mind. For that, the bank tapped esteemed architect Norman Foster, whose global portfolio ranges from the Hearst Tower in New York City to the Reichstag Building redesign in Berlin. 270 Park Avenue silhouette has evolved 3 times since opening in 1917. In 57, the building was demolished, becoming the site of the Union Carbide Building. This became the home of JPMorgan Chase and Co. Operations have since moved across the street to 3383 Madison, which allowed Foster to reimagine the property's facade. There was a lot of conversation about building a building that kind of felt like it was constantly moving upwards. New York City has this phrase called excelsior. It's Latin for ever upwards. Originally when we got the first set of architectural schematics, it was a typical wedding cake building, big trading box at the ground floor. The really unique thing about this building, and that I find really interesting is that it's raised 80 ft off the ground, so that's really different than a lot of the other offices around. And it's purposeful, and the executives at JPMorgan Chase told me it's because they wanted to be good neighbors to their fellow New Yorkers here. They wanted to create a sense of walkability, especially during, you know, a crowded lunch rush like today here in New York. Inside the 60-story skyscraper are renovations that arena cites as ways to elevate the office experience. This includes 3 times more fresh air, up to 30% larger. to maximize natural light and 40% more hospitality space. The building will also be fitted with lighting technology that can mimic natural circadian rhythms or even be customized to personal preferences. Talk to me about the tech in this building. Is there any new tech that's really exciting to you? Any new ways you're using AI to help with this? So I think all of the above, there is lots of new tech in a building like this. All the major systems, the elevator system, the security system, the emergency power systems, the air systems, they are all so much smarter in 2024 than they were in 2015. They'll know when you register for a conference room how you like the temperature, etc. They'll know when you show up at Starbucks in the morning or in whatever the coffee shops we have, how you like your latte. How, how does that work? Do employees have to input preferences or what it's all magic. Machine learning and AI will power these enhancements. Arena says the headquarters will also host 19 different restaurants, some of which include table service. We want people here all day. We don't want you to leave, and we do a lot of events in the morning, in the afternoon, and at night. We have our clients here all the time. We work the facility, so for us these are great investments. Arena says the bank expects to move its 1st 2000 employees into the building at the end of August. By December, the remaining staff are expected to move in. In the last 10 years, the bank says it has delivered 125,000 new or updated seats across its global markets. It also aims to provide 75,000 seats within the next five years. This new building may be the bank's boldest experiment yet, but it's just the beginning of Diamond's ambitious vision for the company. The holy grail for folks in our business is to really create something in the physical world that is a manifestation of the culture of a firm. While the bank's executives are confident that the new headquarters will encourage compliance, the weeks leading up to March will reveal just how willing employees are to commit to the 5 day mandate.

JP Morgan is suing the customers who cashed in on the bank's infinite money glitch that went viral earlier this year. There wasn't actually a glitch. It's just check fraud. Customers would deposit counterfeit checks and then withdraw the cash before the check bounced. And now the bank has filed at least four separate federal lawsuits including one case where some of more than $290,000 was allegedly withdrawn by a chase customer. The total of all four cases comes to more than $661,000. The bank is hoping to get the stolen money back including interest and overdraft fees on the account plus legal fees and in some cases, punitive damages are also being sought.

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have come a long way since the days of cypherpunks and crypto nerds.

Crypto has come a long way in the past 15 years. In the beginning, it was cypherpunk and now it's become big business. There are not only crypto native firms like coin base cracking and Binance, there are also traditional finance companies like JP Morgan and Fidelity that are investing big time. When Bitcoin was founded, it was founded with this core idea of decentralization. No one person controls the monetary supply of Bitcoin. Unlike for example, the US government that controls the supply of the US dollar decentralization though is very hard to do. In practice, it's hard to find someone to buy Bitcoin from you. And it's hard to find someone who can sell you Bitcoin. This is why a core group of centralized companies have grown up to make it easier for people to actually do these types of exchanges and investments. In addition to CFI, there's something called tray or traditional finance. And essentially this encompasses the household and brand names that we're all familiar with when we think of big banks and big finance. This includes JP Morgan and Fidelity. It also includes some of the established fintech firms like Robin Hood, the popular stock Trading app, paypal and Block, formerly known as Square, founded by Jack Dorsey, a lot of their investment and a lot of their engagement in the space of crypto is often more reliant on the technology of Blockchain which underlies Bitcoin and all of the cryptocurrencies that are basically on the market. For example, Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan has often said that he doesn't like Bitcoin, but JP Morgan has a division called Onyx, which is specifically devoted to using the technology of Blockchain to speed up various different kinds of financial transactions. Fintech firms like paypal block do allow you to buy Cryptocurrency. Paypal, for example, lets you buy Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash. Robin Hood allows you to buy more than 10 different cryptocurrencies. For many years, the C five companies have dominated the crypto landscape. But recently with the spate of litigation from the SEC and the federal government, they have left space for trad five firms to occupy a lot of people in the crypto industry are saying that the future of Blockchain and Cryptocurrency does not lie with Coinbase and Binance and all of the large CFI firms. But with the likes of JP Morgan, Fidelity and paypal.
