France’s largest firm rebranded from Total to TotalEnergies in 2021 in reflection of its ongoing diversification from oil into gas and renewables. Its commitment to the latter is notable among traditional energy firms, with an installed capacity of 22 GW of renewable electricity generation at the end of 2023, and a target to reach 35 GW by 2025 and 100 GW by 2030. For context, the installed capacity of the whole of the U.K. is currently just under 58 GW. Total is headquartered in Paris, but employs around 100,000 workers in over 120 countries, with a focus on Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

TotalEnergies is by far the largest French company on the Global 500, exceeding the next largest company, utility Electricité de France (No. 55), by more than $100 billion in revenue.

French oil and gas giant TotalEnergies has about 100,000 employees across operations in 130 countries. Revenue hit $263.3 billion in revenue in 2022, up 42.6% over the previous year, while net profit increased 28% to $20.5 billion amid high global fossil fuel prices.

G500 2022-27-TotalEnergies

Like many of its oil-and-gas industry peers, TotalEnergies, the French petroleum refining company, reported record profit growth in 2021 as gas prices spiked in the wake of resurgent travel. At the same time, the company continued to execute its plan to hit net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 by investing in renewable energy sources. In January 2022, TotalEnergies won rights from the Scottish government to begin building an offshore wind farm in Scottish waters that should be operational by 2030. In July 2022, the company announced talks with the United Arab Emirates to import diesel fuel to France to help address the energy shortage triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Total revenue for the world’s biggest companies fell 4.8% to $31.7 trillion this year—the first decline in half a decade.

G500-2020-25-Total

France's Total faced a modest decline in revenue and profits in 2019 that nonetheless pushed it down five places on the Global 500 this year. Like its energy-sector peers, the company was hit hard by the double-whammy of the coronavirus and the Saudi-Russian price war. As a result—and along with other oil majors—Total had to slash its 2020 capital expenditures sharply. On the climate front, local governments and activists have also sued Total in France for not doing enough to combat global warming. The company, for its part, has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to investments in solar, wind and batteries, which now account for around an eighth of its capital spending.

The world's 500 largest companies generated $31.2 trillion in revenues and $1.7 trillion in profits in 2014. Together, this year's Fortune Global 500 employ 65 million people worldwide and are represented by 36 countries.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues.
